In about 12 hours, I am starting my vacation . . . I should be elated, but I have been anxious all week long, thinking and worrying about this & that, stressing out everyone involved. All day today, even while doing ministry, I could not shake off the negative thoughts… until like a lightning bolt a verse from the morning’s devotion flashed into my mind:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:6).
I had memorized this verse before, and I had just read it this morning, but how utterly I had failed to apply it to my life . . . God did not say, “Be anxious for nothing, except when your family’s about to meet your boyfriend’s family…” He did not say, “be anxious for nothing, except when the weather forecast says rain all week.” He did not say, “Be anxious for nothing, except the inflated costs of restaurants and attractions in Seattle and Vancouver…” He said, “be anxious for NOTHING.”
Furthermore, He said, “but in EVERYTHING by prayer and supplication, let your requests be made known to God.” There is nothing God cannot handle, and He wants us to be stress-free . . . completely. He does not want us to be anxious about ANYTHING at all, because ALL things can be brought to God in prayer.
“…with thanksgiving…” Thanking God shows our trust in Him, that no matter what happens, we can trust that God has our best interest in mind. He is guiding the outcomes, so we should thank Him for His care and devotion.
“…and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” His peace is not a band-aid. His peace actively GUARDS our hearts and minds from stress, anxiety, doubt, fears, and temptation. His peace is a fortress against all the harmful lies of Satan. His peace is abiding.
Are you anxious about anything today? Take it to the Lord in prayer, thanking Him for loving you. And please pray for me, that I can do the same and relax and enjoy my vacation!
Father God, please forgive me for not trusting in You and allowing Satan to enter my heart through anxiety. Please take back any ground he has possessed and grant me Your peace to banish all anxiety from my mind and heart. Thank you for answering my prayer and for being a kind Father! Amen.
