How Can I Have More Faith?

Do you struggle with doubts?  Do you feel like that father whose son the disciples couldn’t heal and you say to Jesus, “If you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us” (Mark 9:22)?

Jesus replies, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes” (v 23).

So then you want faith!  You ask for it – and wonder when it will come.

But faith does not come from merely asking.  The famous preacher Dwight L Moody wrote, “I suppose if all the times I have prayed for faith were put together, it would amount to months. I thought that someday faith would come down and strike me like lightning. But faith did not seem to come. One day I read in the tenth chapter of Romans, ‘Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.’ I had closed my Bible and prayed for faith. I now opened my Bible and began to study, and faith has been growing ever since.”

We are not only to pray for faith but to seek for it in the holy Scriptures.  As we study the Word of God, we will hear God’s voice, and faith will increase.

The question is, do you want to be made whole?  Is there a miracle only Jesus can provide?

The father of the demon-possessed son realized that his weak faith was preventing him from allowing God to work — so Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, ‘Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!’ (v 24).

May that be our prayer as we open our Bibles and allow faith to grow.

Father God, I have been too inactive for too long, expressing desire for increased faith and answered prayers but not following the plan You clearly set out for me to build my faith.  Today, I will study Your Word – please speak to My heart. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
